NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently expressed strong support for President Donald Trump’s Iran strategy, emphasizing its importance for NATO allies’ safety. Rutte underscored the necessity of actions taken to degrade Iran’s nuclear capabilities during an appearance on Special Report.
I think the president is doing exactly what is needed, degrading Iran’s nuclear capability.
Rutte highlighted the potential dangers of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, describing the nation as both a source of chaos and terrorism. Such an event, he noted, would have devastating consequences for the region and the world.
These comments emerged following President Trump’s public criticism of NATO. He expressed frustration over the costs shouldered by the U.S. and what he perceives as inadequate support from NATO allies.
Despite these tensions, Rutte expressed understanding for Trump’s disappointment. He clarified that NATO allies have provided military assistance to the U.S. during conflicts, including the use of bases for operations like Operation Epic Fury.
During this military endeavor, Rutte stated, 500 U.S. aircraft were stationed at Italian bases, while Bucharest adjusted commercial flights to accommodate U.S. forces. European allies continue to assist the U.S. in defense efforts around the Strait of Hormuz.
You see now massive European allies pre-positioning their assets close to the Strait so to be able to help.
Rutte credited Trump for strengthening NATO and prompting allies to increase their defense investments. The shift in defense budgets underscores this change, as noted by increased spending and production in the defense industry.
Rutte highlighted the success of Trump’s Iran approach, referring to the president’s characterization of it as a ‘historic peace agreement.’ He described Trump’s actions as necessary leadership to maintain safety for the U.S. and the alliance.
