Colombia Edges Past Congo to Reach World Cup Knockout Stage

2 hours ago 0

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — In a tense World Cup matchup, Daniel Muñoz secured Colombia’s entry into the knockout stage by scoring the decisive goal against the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Colombian team triumphed with a 1-0 victory, overcoming Congo’s tough defense on Tuesday night.

Muñoz found the net in the 76th minute. His strike followed a deflection off a defender, leaving Congo’s goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi unable to respond. Despite Mpasi’s impressive performance, which included five challenging saves within the first 20 minutes, Muñoz managed to score. This marked Muñoz’s second goal in the tournament.

As the game drew to a close, Congo had opportunities to equalize. Camilo Vargas, Colombia’s goalkeeper, demonstrated skill by blocking a powerful long-range shot from Nathanael Mbuku and later stopping a header by Chancel Mbemba during the final moments.

Colombian forward Luis Díaz faced disappointment when two of his goals were disallowed late in the match. The first was due to a foul in the 79th minute, and the second was ruled offside in the 80th minute.

Congo made an impactful entrance in their first World Cup in 52 years with a 1-1 draw against Portugal, which featured Cristiano Ronaldo. Meanwhile, Colombia has amassed six points from two matches in Group K, positioning them ahead of Portugal by two points and solidifying a five-point lead over Congo. Earlier on Tuesday, Portugal defeated Uzbekistan 5-0, with Ronaldo contributing two goals.

Colombia requires merely a draw against Portugal this Saturday to top the group standings. Such a result would also secure Portugal’s advancement into the knockout rounds.

Notably, Colombia did not participate in the 2022 World Cup. Holding the 11th spot in the global rankings, Colombia is recognized as the third strongest South American team, trailing Brazil and Argentina. Their World Cup journey began with a convincing 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan.

Ranked 47th, Congo’s World Cup preparations faced significant challenges due to an Ebola outbreak. Restrictions linked to Ebola prevented many Congo supporters from attending the tournament.

One passionate fan, Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, missed the opening game due to quarantine measures but made it to the match against Colombia. Known for his symbolic tribute to Patrice Lumumba, Congo’s historic figure, Mboladinga maintained his statue-like stance throughout the game in Guadalajara.

Colombia has never experienced a scoreless tie in their 23 World Cup appearances. Notably, playmaker James Rodríguez shared the field with Colombian legends Freddy Rincón and Carlos Valderrama, each having reached 10 World Cup appearances.
