Comedian Larry David has voiced strong disapproval of President Donald Trump’s celebration of the nation’s 250th anniversary at the White House, which featured a UFC fight. In a poignant interview with Variety, David expressed feeling “embarrassed to be an American” due to the event.
Reflecting on the occasion, David described the fight as a “travesty.” At age 78, he is grappling with feelings of unpatriotism provoked by the spectacle.
“It was embarrassing,” he stated. “I was embarrassed to be an American.”
David’s comments came during the premiere of his upcoming HBO series, “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness.” The show satirizes significant moments in U.S. history and is scheduled to launch on June 26. It promises to include appearances by Jerry Seinfeld, Vince Vaughn, Rita Wilson, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Barack Obama.
Former President Obama’s company, Higher Ground, is behind the series’ production. David shared that Obama excels at improvisation.
The UFC Freedom 250 event took place on June 14, 2026, at the White House’s South Lawn, marking Trump’s 80th birthday. Around 4,300 attendees, inclusive of 1,200 active-duty service members, were present. The Marine Band performed with Zac Brown, and the event concluded with a flyover by the Navy’s Blue Angels and Air Force Thunderbirds.
President Trump remarked, “It was beyond anything that anybody’s ever seen in sports,” as he left the White House en route to the G7 summit in France.
