Multiple agencies are currently engaged in a search operation for a U.S. Marine who disappeared during a nighttime training exercise from the USS Anchorage. This amphibious transport dock is stationed at Naval Base San Diego.
The Navy has transitioned from search and rescue to recovery efforts, covering an area of approximately 2,400 square miles using military ships and aircraft. The Marine’s name is being withheld until family notification.
In recent weeks, this incident marks the second major search for missing personnel by the U.S. military. A previous search followed fatal training accidents involving soldiers in Morocco.
Authorities initiated search and rescue operations around 1:20 a.m. Thursday. After two days, these efforts shifted to recovery operations. The joint search involved the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force, utilizing three surface ships and twelve aircraft.
The missing Marine was part of a training exercise involving the USS Anchorage, the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group. Details of how the Marine disappeared have not been disclosed.
The Associated Press noted that two Army soldiers who went missing while off duty in Morocco were found dead in May.
The Navy stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and all who are affected during this difficult time.”
