Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland and Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois are advocating for an inquiry into the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This department was formerly headed by Elon Musk. The movement for this probe reflects growing interest among Democrats to scrutinize Musk and his tenure with DOGE.
Raskin told Fox News Digital, “I had no specific plan,” about the tentative investigations. He added that DOGE was detrimental to America and voiced strong beliefs that at least one committee would look into it.
Democrats are setting their sights on investigating potential misconduct during the Trump administration after recent electoral successes. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries were questioned about the viability of launching such investigations but avoided committing to specifics.
“Democrats are calling for an investigation into the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), previously led by Elon Musk.”
The start of DOGE occurred at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term. Its aim was to reduce waste and increase transparency in federal spending. Implementing policies like deferred resignations and employee buyouts, DOGE saw a federal workforce reduction of approximately 250,000 employees in 2025, according to the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
Concerns about DOGE’s access to sensitive American information have fueled these calls for investigation. Raskin stated, “The whole thing was premised on a lie, and our private information was completely compromised by it.” Governor Pritzker echoed the need for scrutiny, despite initially expressing skepticism about targeting Musk directly.
“I think there should be a lot of inspection of what DOGE did,” Pritzker commented, cautioning against premature blame on individual players.
Some lawmakers have also suggested reviewing Musk’s companies’ extensive contracts with the government and his recent actions affecting military internet access in Ukraine.
In the aftermath of a substantial electoral victory, Democrats in Congress have committed to utilizing investigative powers to examine not only Musk but also the Trump administration. The focus includes discussions about impeaching former President Donald Trump.
