Celebrity Silence in the Era of Trump

1 month ago 0

During Donald Trump’s presidency, vocal opposition to his administration became common. Many found it both fashionable and profitable to criticize him. Trump himself, who desired immense fame and admiration, often found himself more of a comedic target than a political leader.

Yet, the current climate seems to tell a different story. Prominent public figures who once openly opposed Trump now face repercussions that were once unthinkable.

Journalist Don Lemon experienced this firsthand when he ended up spending a night in jail. ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,’ known for its sharp wit, unexpectedly concluded. Even ’60 Minutes,’ a cornerstone of television journalism, faced turmoil due to alleged political interference.

“This is what a less-free America looks like.”

Despite recent setbacks, including his loss in a self-initiated conflict, Trump’s influence remains strong. A clear indicator is the silence of once-vocal celebrities. These individuals previously had no qualms denouncing Trump but have now retreated.

In the past year, Selena Gomez, whose family includes undocumented immigrants, criticized the administration’s immigration policy in an emotional Instagram post. The backlash was swift and intense, prompting her to delete the post. Right-wing figures like Piers Morgan contributed to the storm of negativity she faced.

Hollywood award shows, once platforms for political speeches targeting Trump’s administration, now largely avoid such commentary. Even ‘Saturday Night Live’ appears to soften its criticisms.

Jennifer Lawrence recently shared her perspective with The Times. She stated: “Celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for. So then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart.” Many celebrities seem to share this sentiment and have opted for silence.

Currently, figures like Tucker Carlson, known for his right-wing commentary, often voice louder criticisms of Trump than those once part of the #Resistance.
