Traces of Hollywood in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico

Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, is a small desert town, home to about 6,000 residents along the Rio Grande. In 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the radio and TV game show “Truth or Consequences,” issued a unique challenge. He promised to broadcast live from any American city willing to adopt the name of his show as a promotional tactic for its 10th anniversary.

The town, previously known as Hot Springs, was quick to take up the offer. Renowned for its geothermal hot springs, it underwent a municipal rebranding. The decision was made overwhelmingly by townspeople, with a vote count of 1,295 to 295, as reported by the Albuquerque Journal on March 31, 1950. Despite the skepticism and ridicule from nearby towns, Truth or Consequences gained the promised publicity.

In classic black-and-white footage, local law enforcement humorously brought Edwards to the town’s main street. They playfully labeled him a “desperado” and informed him of the renamed town. Although he initially stumbled by calling it Hot Springs, Edwards took the mishap in stride, eventually being made a deputy.

Edwards was charmed by the town, visiting yearly from Southern California for the Truth or Consequences Fiesta. This festival started with his first broadcast and continues to be a local tradition after 76 years.

Hollywood’s Nostalgic Connection

Inside Truth or Consequences’ Geronimo Springs Museum lies a tribute to Edwards, who passed away in 2005 at age 92. The Ralph Edwards Room holds an array of memorabilia, including correspondence with seven presidents and hand-painted neckties from former Fiestas.

Aside from “Truth or Consequences,” Edwards gained fame through “This is Your Life,” a show featuring surprise appearances by significant individuals from the lives of unsuspecting guests. Bob Barker succeeded Edwards, hosting the popular show for 18 years before advancing to “The Price is Right.” Barker was also embraced by the town as a beloved figure.

Local and Industry Challenges

The museum offers a bittersweet trip through Hollywood’s past, intertwining the town’s cultural celebration of Edwards with the film and TV industry, which faces challenges today. As highlighted by Meg James, Hollywood confronts declining production levels and shifts to cheaper destinations. The HBO Max medical drama “The Pitt,” filmed in Burbank, represents an attempt by Hollywood to reignite success.

In contrast, Truth or Consequences contends with closures and economic struggles. Nearby Elephant Butte Lake, a local tourist attraction, suffers from severe drought conditions.

However, there are examples of Hollywood’s lingering impact. The Geronimo Springs Museum features “Eddington: The Exhibit,” commemorating a film shot in town featuring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, and Emma Stone. Premiered last summer, the event led to a full house at the historical downtown movie theater.
