Trump Faces Republican Resistance in AG Nomination

President Donald Trump is applying pressure on Republican senators who are demanding concessions before confirming Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche. After a delay in Blanche’s confirmation hearing, Trump criticized two holdouts from the Senate Judiciary Committee on Truth Social.

Trump targeted Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Both have stalled a vote on Blanche, Trump’s personal lawyer, for the top prosecutor position. Trump went as far as to consider withdrawing the nomination until the senators are out of office next year.

“Todd Blanche is a STAR, and everyone knows it!” Trump stated. He criticized Cornyn and Tillis, noting he had refused to endorse them and suggesting their political careers ended due to him. Trump raised past votes for nominees like Merrick Garland to highlight his point.

The confirmation of Todd Blanche has faced significant hurdles. Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley had to postpone the hearing due to lack of support. Some GOP senators are pursuing clear modifications to a settlement between the IRS and Trump.

Though Trump supported Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton over Cornyn, Tillis retired last year. Cornyn dismissed Trump’s threats, indicating concerns about the settlement extend beyond just him and Tillis.

Despite ongoing negotiations, the demands to kill a $2 billion anti-weaponization fund and change Trump’s audit immunity terms remain unmet. Without these changes, Blanche’s confirmation remains uncertain.

The potential resubmission of Blanche’s nomination next year doesn’t assure success, given the current Senate composition. Leaving Blanche as acting attorney general remains an option, similar to previous instances, like former acting Labor Secretary Julie Su’s extended role.
