Philadelphia Independence Parade Canceled Due to Extreme Heat

Americans nationwide are marking the 250th anniversary of the U.S. this week. However, a planned parade in Philadelphia was canceled due to expected high temperatures on Friday.

Welcome America Inc. announced the decision on X, with the city of Philadelphia sharing the message. “Due to the extreme heat, the Salute to Independence Semiquincentennial Parade is cancelled,” the post read.

The National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly posted on X that if Philadelphia International Airport hits the forecast high of 104°F, it will be the hottest there since July 3, 1966.

City Health Commissioner Palak Raval-Nelson extended an ongoing “Heat Health Emergency” through 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the city’s Department of Public Health.

The parade was set to feature floats and marching bands, as described in event details.

Michael DelBene, President and CEO of Welcome America Inc., emphasized safety as the priority. “We cannot host an event of this size under these dangerous conditions,” he stated, acknowledging the efforts of Todd Marcocci and Under the Sun Productions, along with the parade groups, who worked to create a memorable event.

Though large-scale events are a core mission, DelBene reaffirmed that the safety and security of staff, guests, and participants remain the primary concern.
