Grace Pak, a dedicated baker, took on the challenge to create an official cake for the semiquincentennial celebrations of the United States. No plans had been made for a cake, prompting Pak to fill the gap.
Recently, she has spent late-night hours refining intricate details like the torch from Lady Liberty’s hand. Her work is both a culinary and a sculptural feat. Adorned with features such as flying chocolate Black Hawk helicopters and an eagle perched on a branch, her creation is designed to be a symbol of unity amidst political divisions.
The cake, reminiscent of a Mini Cooper in size, also includes Lady Liberty’s arm. This feature is crafted using Rice Krispies Treats and green fondant, demonstrating Pak’s innovative approach.
Pak, a 39-year-old cake artist from New York City, has a rich resume including appearances on the Food Network and contributions to weddings at the Plaza Hotel. She embarked on this project as a reflection of America’s diverse history and culture, not expecting the political complexities she encountered.
She recounts, “It’s the 250th, and I feel like so many people are not excited,” she observed. “I understand where all of that is coming from. People aren’t excited because of what’s going on in the political landscape. But cake is the answer. Bring cake and everyone’s in.”
The cake is set to be unveiled at a ceremony planned for Saturday at the Library of Congress. If completed successfully, it will serve as both a culinary masterpiece and a statement of unity.
