Rising Influence of Democratic Socialists in Colorado Politics: Melat Kiros’ Campaign

1 month ago 0

Democratic Socialists Gain Momentum

The Democratic Party is witnessing an increase in the influence of democratic socialists, a trend highlighted by recent electoral victories. Melat Kiros, a 29-year-old candidate, has drawn significant attention after defeating a long-serving incumbent in the Colorado primary.

Policies and Controversies

Kiros advocates for several progressive policies, such as the abolition of ICE, Medicare for all, and a strong focus on international issues. She aims to end what she terms the ‘genocide in Palestine.’ During a recent interview, Kiros attributed attacks on Jewish people in various countries to Israel’s activities in the Middle East.

Kiros is part of a group of anti-Israel, far-left candidates gaining traction within the Democratic Party. Her victory in the primary, defeating incumbent Diana DeGette, follows similar wins by far-left candidates in New York.

Reactions

The campaign has sparked debate among Colorado’s political figures. Phil Weiser, the state’s Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, criticized Kiros for her views and her response to a deadly attack during a pro-Israel rally in Boulder last year. Weiser expressed concern during a discussion on 9News.

“I just spoke with Attorney General Phil Weiser, who won the Democratic primary for governor last night. He is very likely to be Colorado’s next governor,” commented the host.

Kiros acknowledged the attack on Jewish demonstrators, stating her intent to prioritize efforts against rising hate and antisemitism.

Boulder Attack Details

The attack, carried out by Mohamed Soliman, targeted a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder on June 1, 2025. It resulted in the death of Karen Diamond, 82, and injured a dozen others. Soliman disguised himself before launching incendiary devices at the demonstrators, as noted by prosecutors.

“I don’t know what was in the heart of the perpetrator,” Kiros commented during an interview.

Soliman pleaded guilty to state charges, including murder, and is serving a life sentence. He might face the death penalty on federal hate crime charges.

Campaign Focus

Kiros made her opposition to Israel a key issue in her campaign. In her victory speech, she delineated ending the ‘genocide in Palestine’ as one of her primary goals.
