Fourth of July weekends spent at my aunt and uncle’s lake house near St. Louis provided me with cherished childhood memories. Their modest brick home, positioned atop a rocky driveway, offered a scant view of the shallow cove where we often played.
Inspired by those experiences, my wife and I purchased a lake house in northwest Connecticut near the Berkshires. We hoped to recreate the magic for our three children.
However, the idyllic vision of easy family gatherings sometimes clashes with reality. While we enjoy hosting, challenges occasionally arise. Like when the Wi-Fi barely withstands the strain of everyone streaming, gaming, and downloading simultaneously, leaving them looking to me for a solution—despite subscribing to the most extensive plan available.
They give me the familiar look, suggesting that I misunderstand the workings of digital connectivity. Their frustration dissipates once the spinning wheel disappears, allowing them to resume ignoring each other together.
In the midst of this digital chaos, household chores also pile up. Laundry begins to dominate the staircase, and half-filled garbage bags stall before reaching the trash can. The dishwasher’s inner workings unfold in a manner that might unsettle its creators, as emptying and loading remain a contentious issue at our home.
Despite these minor hiccups, the goal is to make the lake house a place where family bonds strengthen and unforgettable memories are made.
