Suspension of Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Ban Raises Questions

Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter commented on FIFA’s recent decision to suspend the red card ban of USA World Cup player Folarin Balogun ahead of their match against Belgium. Blatter expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies.” He questioned FIFA’s integrity if political influence played a role in the decision.

Belgium appealed FIFA’s decision and requested an explanation for the suspension’s reversal. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed disappointment, and Belgium’s coach, Rudi Garcia, criticized FIFA’s ruling, implying it compromised football’s integrity.

UEFA also criticized FIFA’s decision, stating it “crossed a red line.” The controversy stirred debate over the influence of external factors in FIFA’s decisions.
