Former FIFA President Sepp Blatter commented on FIFA’s recent decision to suspend the red card ban of USA World Cup player Folarin Balogun ahead of their match against Belgium. Blatter has been banned twice by FIFA due to a corruption investigation and will remain suspended from organizational activities until 2027. Gianni Infantino currently leads FIFA, having replaced Blatter.
Balogun received a red card during a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina for an incident involving a defender’s ankle. The decision followed a VAR review. A source informed Fox News that former President Donald Trump called Infantino, asking FIFA to review the incident. The decision to overturn the card was announced shortly after.
Blatter expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence, and independent bodies.” He questioned FIFA’s integrity if political influence played a role in the decision.
Belgium appealed FIFA’s decision and requested an explanation for the suspension’s reversal. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) expressed disappointment, and Belgium’s coach, Rudi Garcia, criticized FIFA’s ruling, implying it compromised football’s integrity.
UEFA also criticized FIFA’s decision, stating it “crossed a red line.” The controversy stirred debate over the influence of external factors in FIFA’s decisions.
