Mbappé Condemns Racist Remarks by Paraguayan Senator

France’s star player Kylian Mbappé strongly criticized Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla for her racist comments following Paraguay’s defeat against France in the World Cup round of 16. Amarilla, a senator from Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Party, mocked Mbappé’s origins, upbringing, education, and appearance after he scored the decisive penalty.

Mbappé responded on social media, calling Amarilla a “despicable woman” and saying she was “unworthy” of her position in Paraguay’s Congress. He added that her actions overshadowed the accomplishments of Paraguayan players in the tournament. France’s victory over Paraguay has moved them into the quarterfinals against Morocco.

The Paraguayan government issued a statement condemning Amarilla’s remarks as opposed to the nation’s values of peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity. It clarified that her views do not represent the government or people of Paraguay. Similarly, the French Football Federation labeled her remarks as “utterly abhorrent” and “unacceptable,” stating that the issue would be taken to legal authorities.

Support for Mbappé came from France’s President Emmanuel Macron and sports minister Marina Ferrari, who emphasized that Mbappé symbolizes the values of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Macron shared on social media that Mbappé had scored “one more goal” against racism, affirming his full support for the player.

France’s assistant coach Guy Stéphan also condemned Amarilla’s comments, describing them as indignant and scandalous. The Associated Press sought Amarilla’s reaction via her social media but received no response by Monday.

Former Paraguayan goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert had also made controversial remarks by referring to France as “a squad from Africa.” Philippe Diallo, the president of the French Football Federation, mentioned that while Chilavert was once a notable player, he had tarnished his reputation with such comments.
