On Monday, the Sacramento Kings released DeMar DeRozan after his request to leave the team. The six-time All-Star is now set to become an unrestricted free agent following the waiver process. Reports indicate collaboration between DeRozan and the team for this release.
Rumors suggest several teams are interested in DeRozan, including the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors. The latter is where DeRozan began his NBA career 17 years ago. Notably, the Los Angeles Lakers, despite past dealings with DeRozan, have reportedly declined interest, according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
DeRozan, who hails from Compton, California, became a distinguished player at Compton High School, earning McDonald’s All-American honors. He later attended USC, staying close to home where his No. 10 jersey is retired today. Drafted ninth overall by the Raptors in 2009, DeRozan has thrived over nearly two decades in the NBA.
Known for his mid-range scoring, DeRozan last season averaged 18.4 points and 4.1 assists per game, shooting 49.7% from the field over 77 games. He turns 37 in August and has achieved six All-Star selections and three All-NBA honors. As the Raptors’ franchise leader in points, he ranks 16th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list with 26,711 points. An NBA championship remains out of reach for him.
With the Lakers out of the picture, the Miami Heat emerge as a prominent suitor. The Heat recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo but sacrificed depth in this trade, losing players like Tyler Herro and Jaime Jaquez Jr. Additionally, Norman Powell, last season’s lead scorer, signed with the Bulls.
The Warriors also present options to optimize their championship prospects with Steph Curry and Draymond Green. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Clippers may consider an opportunity with DeRozan.
Toronto might be the best fit for DeRozan. With Kyle Lowry potentially re-signing for a final year and Kawhi Leonard joining the Raptors, Toronto holds promise. Lowry and DeRozan share a close bond, which could influence DeRozan’s decision. Toronto’s first NBA title in 2019 was without DeRozan, and returning there could be meaningful for this final stage of his career.
