Iran and Iraq Mourn the Passing of Supreme Leader

On July 7, 2026, mourning ceremonies are underway in five cities within Iran and Iraq. This follows the announcement from Iranian state media on the death of the supreme leader in late February. The streets are filled with millions of mourners expressing their grief and showcasing a powerful display of support for the Islamic Republic of Iran.

These gatherings illustrate both the sorrow for the late Ayatollah Khamenei and the strength of the Islamic Republic. Khamenei, who led Iran for decades, played a crucial role in establishing the nation as a significant regional force and was known for his uncompromising stance against dissent.

Journalists in Tehran on Monday witnessed that the funeral route was shortened due to the large crowd. The procession, originally planned for over 17 miles, was limited to a slow movement from the center of a designated road to Azadi Square. Coffins adorned with the national flag were part of the procession.

Qom hosted the ceremonies on Tuesday. Known as a hub of Shiite Muslim scholarship, this city holds significant religious importance. The funeral program is set to conclude in Mashhad on Thursday. The ayatollah will be interred at the shrine of Imam Reza, a figure revered by some Shiites as one of the twelve spiritual heirs of the Prophet Muhammad.

The selection of sites for these ceremonies underscores the clerical status and leadership role of the supreme leader within the Islamic Republic.
