Messi Leads Argentina to Stunning World Cup Comeback

Argentina’s Lionel Messi once again demonstrated his exceptional talent at this year’s World Cup. On Tuesday, the Argentine icon scored his eighth goal of the tournament, leading his team to a remarkable 3-2 victory over Egypt. Despite trailing by two goals with only 11 minutes left in regulation time, Argentina achieved an impressive comeback.

The defending champions will now face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Kansas City, Missouri. After the final whistle, Messi, visibly emotional, had scored his 21st career World Cup goal in the 83rd minute, leveling the score at 2-2.

Enzo Fernandez then scored the winning goal in stoppage time, securing one of the most memorable World Cup comebacks. Cristian Romero initiated the rally in the 79th minute. In an interview after the match, Fernandez stated, “This is a phenomenal group that never gives up. We’ve come to enjoy another World Cup and aim to win once more.”

Earlier in the game, Argentina was down 2-0 following goals by Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico. Messi missed an opportunity in the first half when his penalty kick was saved by Egypt’s goalkeeper, Mostafa Shobeir. He also hit the post while the score was 1-0.

Argentina, striving to be the first team to win back-to-back titles since Brazil’s victories in 1958 and 1962, faced challenges throughout the match. Afterward, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his emotions, saying, “I’m so emotional. What a group of players.”

Initially, it appeared that Messi, participating in potentially his last World Cup at 39 years old, might experience a painful exit from the tournament. Egypt seized a surprising lead in the 15th minute, with Ibrahim outmaneuvering Lisandro Martinez to head Marwan Attia’s cross into the corner.

Argentina quickly received a chance to equalize when Haissem Hassan fouled Nicolas Tagliafico in the box. The referee awarded a penalty, and Messi stepped up amid high expectations. However, Shobeir thwarted him, diving left to block the shot. This marked Messi’s second penalty miss of the tournament, having also missed against Austria in the group stage.

Despite being the all-time leading scorer at World Cups, Messi has missed four of eight penalty kicks. Later in the half, Shobeir executed another superb save against Julian Alvarez from close range.

Egypt briefly believed it had extended its lead in the second half when Mostafa Zico concluded a flowing attack. However, celebrations were disrupted by a video review disallowing the goal due to an earlier foul. Egypt did score a second goal in the 67th minute with a similar play, but it was insufficient to hold back Argentina.
