Astronomers have discovered a surprising substance in the space between stars: Erythrulose, a sugar also found in raspberries and self-tanners, has been detected in the interstellar medium. This medium consists of thin clouds of gas and dust scattered between stars.
Sugars are crucial not only for sweetening foods but also as fuels for cells and components of DNA. Scientists are keen to understand how sugars form in space, as they are vital to life. Using two radio telescopes in Spain, researchers studied a large gas cloud near the Milky Way’s center and identified this sugar in gas form by comparing telescope data to laboratory samples. This discovery is another significant finding in space science.
Published in ‘Nature Astronomy,’ the research builds on previous studies where scientists detected sugar varieties and genetic material components in our galaxy. About 25 years ago, a cousin to table sugar was found near the Milky Way’s center, and samples from asteroid Bennu revealed additional sugars, including a DNA key ingredient.
Though erythrulose is not essential for life, it can convert into a form thought to be crucial for life’s origins on Earth. Astrophysicist Erika Hamden noted its complexity, highlighting the wonder of discovering such substances in the galaxy.
These interstellar studies aim to unravel life’s beginnings. Researchers ponder whether vital components were delivered by distant comets or space rocks, or if they existed within the galaxy, eventually aiding the formation of our solar system. The new sugar discovery supports the latter theory.
Scientists continue to search for more sugars in space to understand their forms and conversions. Finding them may indicate their presence in distant galaxy areas. According to astrophysicist Izaskun Jiménez-Serra from Spain’s Center for Astrobiology, this discovery suggests that life’s key ingredients could exist elsewhere in the universe, hinting at the possibility of life beyond Earth.
