Darline Graham Becomes South Carolina’s First Female Senator

Senator Darline Graham, Republican from South Carolina, brings a series of notable firsts to both the Senate and her home state. In a historic moment, she was sworn in on Tuesday, becoming the first female senator from South Carolina, the first sister appointed to the Senate, and the first to fill the shoes of her late brother, Senator Lindsey Graham.

“Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him,” Darline Graham expressed during her appointment ceremony. “My brother was an amazing person, an outstanding leader, and a genuinely good man.”

Darline Graham has witnessed her brother’s political journey closely, having accompanied him on campaign trails and during his own swearing-in events. Despite not having held an elected position previously, she is well-versed in the workings of politics.

Reflecting on her brother’s presidential campaign, Lindsey Graham commented in 2015, “If she took a role, she would be a great representative of our country.” Such endorsements highlight her potential to fulfill her new responsibilities.

The transition to her Senate role was swift, following Lindsey Graham’s unexpected passing. Her official appointment occurred on Monday by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, with President Donald Trump suggesting her for the position. Senator Tim Scott, also from South Carolina, supported her by joining her in public appearances.

“It’s my honor to ask Lindsey’s little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work,” stated Governor McMaster.

As a caretaker for the seat, Darline Graham is tasked with completing the remainder of her brother’s term, which concludes in January. At that time, a new senator will be chosen for South Carolina.

The GOP is actively preparing for a special election to succeed Senator Lindsey Graham as the nominee for South Carolina. Congress members Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman, both Republicans, have shown interest. The election is set for August 11. President Trump remains undecided on his endorsement but has previously supported Rep. Russell Fry.

Republicans face additional tasks, such as finding replacements for Lindsey Graham’s committee positions. Senate Majority Leader John Thune conveyed that these decisions are underway. The immediate focus includes Darline Graham’s preferences regarding committee assignments.
