Bill Maher Criticizes Celebrity Disconnect During COVID-19

Bill Maher, the talk show host, criticized celebrities for appearing out of touch during the COVID-19 pandemic on his “Club Random” podcast. During a conversation with media mogul Byron Allen, both agreed they preferred living in houses over apartments due to the privacy it provides.

Byron Allen mentioned that many New Yorkers chose to leave the city amid the pandemic, seeking havens like Aspen or the Hamptons. Maher pointed out the discrepancy between wealthy liberal rhetoric and their actual behavior during that period.

Mahar stated, “Every time I turned on the TV, it was some version of, ‘We’re all in it together.’ No we’re not, you f—ing a–holes, you f—ing posers.”

He highlighted how some people were enjoying comfort in their homes, having their meals delivered, while others did the delivering. Despite being a left-leaning celebrity, Maher has frequently emphasized how liberal celebrities struggle to relate genuinely with everyday people.

The pandemic also saw vacuums in authenticity from celebrities, partly exemplified when public figures like Gal Gadot and others sang John Lennon’s “Imagine,” a gesture criticized as insincere given the context of loss faced by many ordinary people.

Media mogul Byron Allen noted the exodus of New Yorkers who could afford to leave. Maher suggested that if society truly wanted unity, more equitable contributions, like rotating who delivers food, should be considered. Celebrities often remain insulated from everyday struggles, worsening the perceived gap.

During the pandemic, food delivery services surged in popularity due to restrictions and reduced public interactions. The celebrity video featuring “Imagine” was later acknowledged by Gal Gadot as “in poor taste.”
