Federal authorities have charged a Louisiana resident with murder after the shooting death of a deputy U.S. marshal. Clarence A. Frazier Jr., 48, from Alexandria allegedly opened fire on officers attempting to serve an arrest warrant.
Officers were serving the warrant related to a prior sexual battery charge when Frazier purportedly barricaded himself inside his home. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana reported that Frazier now faces charges of murdering a federal officer, which could result in a life sentence or the death penalty upon conviction.
The deceased officer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Drew Hanson, was described by officials as a dedicated husband, father, and son. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed sorrow over Hanson’s death, emphasizing that the alleged perpetrator will face severe legal consequences.
The incident happened on July 13 when the U.S. Marshals Service, alongside the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, located Frazier at his home. Authorities secured a search warrant for the property, and upon announcing their presence, forced entry into Frazier’s residence.
Frazier allegedly retreated into a bedroom, where he shot Hanson before being subdued following a protracted standoff. Hanson’s injuries led to his death from gunshot wounds sustained during the encounter.
