The U.S. Mint has initiated the production of a new $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump’s face to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, according to the Treasury Department. Although the final design was approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts earlier this year, the unveiled coin differs somewhat, notably in its material composition. Instead of being made from gold, it has a gold finish.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the coin is intended to celebrate “the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism.” By featuring President Trump, it reflects American values and the national promise of preserving freedom for all. Trump commented on Fox Business Network that the decision to feature him on a coin is “very unusual, but I was honored by it,” and expressed amusement by calling the coin “very cute.”
Trump has consistently placed his name and likeness in the historical record, exemplified by the renaming of the U.S. Institute of Peace and the Kennedy Center, among other initiatives. Criticism has emerged regarding the depiction of a living president on currency, which federal law prohibits. However, the treasury secretary holds some authority to authorize coins in specific instances.
The coin’s front displays Trump in a suit and tie, maintaining a stern expression. Above his image, the word “LIBERTY” appears, with the dates 1776-2026 below. “IN GOD WE TRUST” is centered on the coin. The reverse side showcases the bald eagle from the Great Seal of the U.S., with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the Latin phrase “E PLURIBUS UNUM” marked on the shield on the eagle’s breast.
The final design departed from the initial approval, notably removing Trump’s fists resting on a supposed desk. The Treasury did not explain why changes were made. Additionally, in March, the department announced Trump’s signature would be added to all new U.S. paper currency, which traditionally includes the signatures of the treasury secretary and the treasurer.
