Northwest Indiana Faces Air Quality Challenges Due to Canadian Wildfires

Northwest Indiana is experiencing significant air quality issues due to smoke from Canadian wildfires, leading to the declaration of another Air Quality Action Day and the cancellation of various regional events. According to the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM), heavy wildfire smoke is entering the state, driven by a northern front, which will contribute to high levels of fine particulate matter. Expected readings will fall into the ‘Very Unhealthy’ range, affecting areas in Northwest, North Central, and Northeast Indiana.

In Northwest Indiana, fine particulate matter levels were reported between 201 and 300 on a scale of 500, as per IDEM’s Smog Watch webpage. Meanwhile, Chicago’s air quality reached 395 out of 500, according to AirNow.

Numerous locations in Northwest Indiana, including the Hobart Pool, closed Thursday due to poor air quality. The Summer Market on the Lake was also canceled. Residents are discouraged from engaging in prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities and are advised to move physical activities indoors or reschedule them. Those with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and teenagers are particularly urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.

Indiana Dunes National Park officials used social media to raise awareness of the air quality alert, advising visitors to check AirNow.gov, monitor symptoms, and take safety precautions. They emphasized restricting outdoor activities for individuals with asthma, heart or lung conditions, or sensitivities to air pollution. Conditions may change throughout the day at the park.

Munster Parks and Recreation announced on Facebook that summer camp attendees would not visit the community pool due to air quality concerns. The Hammond Festival of the Lakes remained on schedule, although organizers did issue warnings regarding an extreme heat advisory. Hammond Farmed and Forged Market was canceled because of air quality issues, with the Kids Day Special Market postponed to July 30.

AccuWeather reports that over 800 wildfires are ongoing across Canada, prompting air quality alerts in other Great Lakes states. Smoke from southwestern Ontario has exacerbated air quality issues, as noted by IDEM. The agency declared Air Quality Action Days for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in Northwest Indiana. On Wednesday, ozone levels were found unhealthy for sensitive groups due to high temperatures, sunny skies, low humidity, and calm winds contributing to stagnant air conditions and elevated surface pressure.

For Monday and Tuesday, IDEM expected hot temperatures, sunny skies, and light winds, with pollutant buildup from Lake Michigan raising air quality concerns. Ricky Castro, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, expressed uncertainty about Friday’s forecast and indicated that the haziest conditions might arise Thursday night. Illinois State Climatologist Trent Ford explained that air movement from Canada is typical this time of year due to a high-pressure system, pushing central Canada air and wildfire smoke into the Great Lakes region.
