President Donald Trump announced a successful conversation with Britain’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham. The dialogue, described as ‘very good’ by Trump, occurred soon after Burnham assumed office. Trump expressed plans to meet Burnham in the ‘not too distant future’ to further discuss mutual interests.

During the call, both leaders acknowledged the enduring U.S.-U.K. relationship and challenges that Burnham faces in his new role. Trump assured American support in these endeavors. ‘We discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship we have had with the UK,’ Trump stated.

Burnham, who took office as Prime Minister on July 20, 2026, delivered a speech at 10 Downing Street, highlighting his call for a ‘new political model.’ Trump affirmed Burnham’s capability to tackle his responsibilities with the U.S.A.’s assistance.

The conversation also covered topics like North Sea oil, trade, the U.S.-U.K. military alliance, and efforts to clear mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Burnham’s office mentioned the Prime Minister’s anticipation of welcoming Trump to Manchester in a future visit.

Furthermore, Trump provided Burnham with updates on the Middle East situation, while Burnham reiterated the U.K.’s dedication to ensuring safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz for global shipping. The British office emphasized the U.K.’s priority on defense and security in collaboration with allies.

On the domestic front, Prime Minister Burnham emphasized reindustrialization efforts aimed at stimulating economic growth across the country.

Trump described the phone call as significantly successful, stating, ‘The call was interesting, and went very well. I wished Prime Minister Burnham, GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED!’ Burnham follows Keir Starmer’s tenure, who served nearly two years as PM and announced plans for resignation.

The leaders have previously exchanged criticism, spotlighting their political differences. Trump’s prior remarks described Burnham as ‘extremely liberal,’ whereas Burnham openly criticized Trump. Andy Burnham is now tasked with reshaping the U.K. amid frequent leadership changes.
