Hasan Piker Faces Scrutiny Over Political Involvement and Past Remarks

Socialists within the Democratic Party are showing increasing discontent. At the College Democrats of America Summer Convention, far-left Twitch streamer Hasan Piker called for a progressive shift, criticizing ‘compromising’ Democrats. Minnesota Senate candidate Peggy Flanagan supported this view by advocating for the dismantling of ICE.

Piker’s controversial past further fuels debates. He recently displayed a framed newspaper front page from Sept. 12, 2001, showing the 9/11 attacks, prompting criticism. Viewers saw this in his stream on July 13, with the front page reading, “U.S. Attacked: Hijacked Jets Destroy Twin Towers and Hit Pentagon in Day of Terror.”

In 2019, Piker faced backlash for the comment “America deserved 9/11.” Although he later clarified that his statement criticized U.S. foreign policy, he acknowledged the language was inappropriate.

Piker’s influence extends beyond his streams. His speech at the College Democrats of America’s convention from July 17-19 drew attention. Other speakers included David Hogg, Randi Weingarten, and various Democratic lawmakers.

Piker was mocked for wearing a jacket compared to Mao Zedong’s and condemning Democrats who cooperate with what he termed ‘fascists.’ He criticized Democrats for supporting ICE and Israel, environmental harm, and exploitation of workers.

The event’s co-sponsor, J Street U, faced backlash for its connection to Piker. Founder Jeremy Ben Ami replied, emphasizing their aim to engage politically even when disagreement occurs.

Criticism also came from DSA Watch and the CDA Jewish Caucus. DSA Watch labeled Piker’s claims against it as unfounded. The CDA Jewish Caucus accused Piker of antisemitism and misogyny, stating his presence as a threat to Jewish safety and community inclusion.

The Anti-Defamation League expressed disappointment with Piker’s involvement, fearing it normalizes antisemitism.

Piker’s association with Democratic figures like Abdul El-Sayed and Claire Valdez sparked debates. Democrats face a dilemma: Does aligning with Piker engage younger voters or compromise party values?
