CBP Detects Prohibited Goods in Luggage from Thailand

Officers from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) have uncovered nearly 100 pounds of banned meats, plants, and wildlife within luggage arriving from Thailand. This discovery was aided by a CBP agriculture detector dog named Maisy, who signaled the presence of suspicious items.

The contents of the suitcase included 50 pounds of various meats, 33 pounds of mangoes, garlic, bamboo, banana plants, and 16 pounds of Bengal monitor lizard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service took responsibility for the Bengal monitor lizard.

CBP shared an image of Maisy with the confiscated goods, highlighting her crucial role in identifying potential biosecurity threats.

The role of CBP agriculture detector dogs like Maisy is vital in examining international luggage for prohibited items. These can introduce pests or diseases, thus posing significant risks to U.S. ecosystems.

In another instance, at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, California Department of Fish and Wildlife officers, alongside National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration staff, inspected a vehicle carrying approximately 436 fish. The catch included species such as rockfish, lingcod, sheephead, and yellowtail.

Authorities found the individuals involved lacked valid Mexican fishing licenses and intended to sell the fish within the United States. The fish was seized as evidence, with charges pending concerning illegal fishing, lack of licenses, and unlawful importation.
