2 weeks ago 0

More than 10,000 people were evacuated overnight in southwestern France due to a fierce wildfire near Lège Cap-Ferret, a popular tourist destination on the Atlantic Ocean. The fire has spread across more than 4,900 acres. Despite the extensive area affected, no injuries have been reported so far.

The Gironde prefecture confirmed the deployment of approximately 500 firefighters, who are working tirelessly to control the blaze. Authorities describe the situation as challenging, necessitating the precautionary evacuation measures. Those evacuated include tourists from eight holiday camps and campgrounds, alongside over 1,000 residents living near the forest edge.

Reception and respite centers have been established in nine municipalities to accommodate the evacuees, with over 2,500 people currently seeking shelter in these facilities.

“The situation remains unfavorable,” stated the Gironde prefecture.

This summer, Southern Europe has experienced a series of significant fires. Experts attribute these events to climate change, which is increasing the prevalence and severity of heat and dryness, thus escalating wildfire risks.

France has faced numerous wildfires in recent weeks, compounded by record temperatures and dry weather. The region’s plants and vegetation are experiencing severe water stress, elevating the risk of fires.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that over 12,500 wildfires have occurred since the year’s start, resulting in nearly 44,000 hectares being burned.
