Chris Brown, a Grammy-winning singer, pleaded guilty to affray in a London nightclub incident. The altercation injured a music producer. During a hearing at London’s Southwark Crown Court, Brown, now 37, changed his plea. Initially, he denied more severe charges connected to what prosecutors described as a ‘vicious attack’ in 2023.
Prosecutors agreed to drop charges of assault, attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon—a bottle—as part of the plea deal. Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, also admitted to affray. Both were initially set for trial in October.
Brown had previously rejected claims of attacking Abraham Diaw with a bottle in February 2023 at the Tape nightclub in Mayfair, an upscale London neighborhood. Prosecutors, however, asserted that surveillance footage captured the brawl in front of a large crowd. Senior prosecutor Claire Campbell remarked on the incident, stating, ‘This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub, where Brown used a glass bottle to strike the victim’s head twice.’
She emphasized the importance of addressing such violence, adding that the Crown Prosecution Service, in collaboration with the police and the broader criminal justice system, aims to demonstrate that no one is above the law.
Brown had been released on a bail of 5 million pounds (approximately $6.75 million), allowing him to tour in Europe and North America during the previous summer. After his Friday court appearance, he was again granted bail, pending his sentencing on October 26. The affray charge could result in a sentence of up to three years in prison.
Donning a tan suit paired with gold-rimmed sunglasses and a St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, Brown signed autographs for fans upon leaving the courthouse.
Brown gained fame as a teenager in 2005, securing his first Grammy for best R&B album in 2011 with ‘F.A.M.E.’ He later received another Grammy in the same category with ’11:11 (Deluxe)’ in 2025.
