Measles Cases Surge in the U.S., Highlighting Public Health Concerns

Measles has reemerged as a persistent public health challenge in the United States over the past two years. The spread is not slowing down. As of July 22, 2026, there were 2,295 confirmed cases in the country, according to a tracker from Johns Hopkins University, surpassing the numbers from 2025, which had 2,286 cases nationwide.

Outbreak Locations

Cases have appeared across the nation, with significant outbreaks worsening in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Utah, Texas, and Arizona. In 2025, Texas experienced the largest outbreak, with 803 cases recorded in the state.

In the latest update from the CDC on July 17, 2026, there were 34 new outbreaks reported, compared to 48 in 2025. Most cases stemmed from local outbreaks, with some linked to international visitors.

Vaccination Status and Demographics

Data shows that 93% of all measles patients in both 2025 and 2026 were either unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination status. The majority of cases occurred in children and young adults between 5 and 19 years old. Although there have been no deaths reported in 2026, three deaths occurred in 2025.

Measles Transmission

First eliminated in 2000, measles can spread via direct contact with infectious droplets or airborne transmission when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.

Symptoms typically appear within one to two weeks and include a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash of flat, red spots follows, starting on the face and spreading to the rest of the body. Contagion is highest four days before and after the rash appears.

Community Protection

Dr. Marc Siegel, senior medical analyst for Fox News, emphasized measles’ highly contagious nature. He noted that up to 90% of susceptible individuals exposed to measles will become infected. “We need a 95% vaccine coverage rate to ensure herd immunity,” he stated.

The herd immunity threshold is determined by the contagion level of a disease and the effectiveness of immunity from vaccination or previous infection. Two-dose measles vaccinations are nearly 100% effective, and natural immunity after infection is lifelong.

Dr. Siegel stressed the necessity of community protection, particularly for those who cannot receive live virus vaccines, such as people who are immunocompromised or pregnant. He also warned that continued outbreaks could jeopardize the U.S.’s measles elimination status.

The CDC advises everyone to receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, asserting that vaccination is the best protection. Individuals displaying symptoms or suspecting exposure should self-isolate and contact their doctor to avoid spreading the infection at medical centers.
