Recent reports reveal that three subcontractors working on the Obama Presidential Center have filed legal claims, alleging non-payment of nearly $900,000. These claims add to a mounting list of payment disputes linked to the project.

The subcontractors have each filed mechanics liens, which are legal instruments used in construction to claim unpaid costs. They are related to the work performed on Home Court, the Center’s basketball and events facility, covering structural steel, excavation and concrete, and gymnasium flooring.

• Area Erectors, a structural steel subcontractor, is claiming nearly $620,000.
• CSI 3000, a Minority Business Enterprise handling excavation and concrete, claims roughly $236,000 is owed.
• Floors Incorporated, responsible for gymnasium flooring, states they are owed nearly $25,000.

These claims, unlike others focused on the main campus, are tied explicitly to Home Court. This facility was constructed under a separate contract and is hosting WNBA All-Star Weekend events with former President Barack Obama in attendance.

Broader Context and Challenges

The payment disputes are part of the broader challenges faced during construction, including significant cost overruns and legal issues around contracting practices. Initially estimated at about $350 million, the project’s cost has exceeded $1 billion.

The newly filed liens against the Obama Presidential Center property do not specify which organization is liable for the payments. The Cook County Clerk’s Office noted a typical delay before these documents appear online, explaining why they emerged recently.

Neither the Obama Foundation nor Elevate Design Builders, the entity managing Home Court’s construction, have commented on the issue.

Fox News Digital identified three additional unreported mechanics liens amounting to about $557,000. These involve other sections of the Obama Presidential Center project.

• O’Leary’s Contractors Equipment & Supply is pursuing approximately $184,000 for unpaid equipment rentals.
• The Cement Masons’ Union Trust Funds is claiming over $326,000 in unpaid benefits.
• Intek Construction Products is seeking $47,000 for labor and materials.

These additional claims relate to projects managed by Lakeside Alliance, which emphasized its commitment to resolving outstanding issues amid the center’s opening.

Previous Payment Disputes

Earlier, Black subcontractors claimed unpaid millions, with Concrete Collective filing a substantial lien amounting to over $40 million. Although some disputes have been resolved, such as with Adamson Plumbing, others remain ongoing.

While some mechanics liens have been withdrawn or resolved, others led companies to seek bankruptcy protection, though it is not recorded that the Obama Presidential Center directly caused these financial issues.
