An Unjust Incarceration
Hadley started dating Ian Diaz in 2013 after connecting online. They purchased a condominium together but separated in 2015 due to financial disputes. Ian then met Angela Connell online in early 2016, and they married soon after. Angela accused Hadley of sending threatening emails and impersonating her online, directing men to their home for supposed ‘rape fantasy’ encounters.
Two men who went to the condominium told authorities they believed they had been invited for consensual encounters. In June 2016, Angela reported an attempted assault by a man in her garage. Police arrested Hadley, who was released on bail and then rearrested as the alleged threats persisted.
Evidence Exposes the True Culprits
Investigators eventually traced the emails to Angela Diaz’s devices and locations. Angela had used multiple email accounts and servers to mask her identity. She sent threats to herself and posed as Hadley while providing personal information to strangers.
The investigation uncovered further deceit by Angela, including false claims of health issues and legal impersonations. She pleaded guilty in October 2017 to several charges, receiving a five-year prison sentence.
Ian Diaz’s Involvement Revealed
Ian Diaz denied knowing about Angela’s activities, but a federal probe in 2017 found he orchestrated the plot. He was indicted in 2021 and lost his job as a criminal investigator. Convicted of conspiracy and other charges, Ian received a prison sentence of over ten years.
Legal Battles and Settlements
Michelle Hadley pursued a federal lawsuit against Anaheim city, its employees, Angela Diaz, and Ian Diaz for her wrongful arrest. In 2021, a settlement with the city was approved by the City Council, leading to the dismissal of her claims against municipal employees. The financial terms of this settlement and a separate agreement with Angela Diaz remained undisclosed.
