Intensive Search Underway for Missing American Woman in Grenada

A search operation is in progress for Elizabeth “Liz” Waddell, a 44-year-old woman from North Carolina, who disappeared while vacationing on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Waddell was last seen near Grand Anse Beach in St. George’s on Wednesday, according to the Royal Grenada Police Force.

Waddell, who had traveled to Grenada with a friend, was staying at the Hideaway Waterfront Apartments. Her disappearance was reported by a family friend, stating that Waddell had headed out for a swim and left her towel on the pier. The Grenada Broadcasting Network (GBN) reported on this incident.

Grenadian authorities have reached out to fishermen, boat operators, and residents along the southern coast of the island for any information that could assist in locating Waddell. A police bulletin describes her as 5 feet, 5 inches tall with short blond hair.

The investigation involves police officers, divers, and students from St. George’s University, as reported by GBN.

Cailen Waddell, Elizabeth’s husband, shared on Facebook that he is traveling to Grenada to join the search. He commended the local police for their communication and efforts in attempting to locate his wife, whom he described as a “loving, free-spirited person” capable of making friends easily.

According to family friend Amanda Romano-Harmon, Waddell’s companion was taking an online course at their Airbnb while Waddell decided to go for a swim. Romano-Harmon recounted that Waddell, after setting up near the pool, disappeared from view later that day, with her towel found on a pier. When Waddell did not return for several hours and did not have her phone, her friend reported her missing.

Authorities in Grenada urge anyone with information to contact the South Saint George Police Station or any nearby police station. The U.S. State Department acknowledged the situation, emphasizing the safety of Americans abroad but refraining from further comment due to privacy considerations.
