Michael Lombardi on Paid Leave at North Carolina

1 week ago 0

Michael Lombardi, the football general manager for North Carolina, has been placed on paid administrative leave. The university made this announcement on Monday morning, just days before the Tar Heels’ preseason camp starts. No specific reasons were provided, as the school mentioned that discussions regarding personnel matters are restricted.

Lombardi transitioned from the NFL to college football when North Carolina appointed him in December 2024. His previous roles included serving as the general manager for the Cleveland Browns in 2013. Furthermore, he was closely associated with Bill Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach, who had recently joined the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. The recruitment of Belichick aimed at revitalizing a program that had struggled to stay consistently competitive in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

A few months after Belichick’s arrival, Lombardi expressed intentions to mold the college team with NFL-like operations. He emphasized that the Tar Heels consider themselves as a unique extension of the NFL, tapping into the deep professional connections within the staff.

Under Belichick’s leadership, the Tar Heels experienced a challenging first season, finishing with a 4-8 record. The team is set to start his second season with an opener against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, on August 29.
