In a separate incident, at least 19 cadets from the Capital Guardian Youth Challenge Academy in Laurel, Maryland, were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of an unknown illness. This prompted a mass casualty response. DC National Guard operates this military-style program for at-risk teens.
One parent reported that blood tests indicated elevated carbon monoxide levels in her son, who had symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, and nausea hours after other cadets were affected.
Although the youth academy decided to temporarily close, Anne Arundel County Fire Department reported no elevated carbon monoxide levels, despite conducting an investigation.
The illness’s cause remains unconfirmed, though food-related issues are considered a possibility. DC National Guard stated their commitment to cadet safety and is collaborating with medical personnel and public health officials. 19 cadets were hospitalized, with one adult evaluated on-site but declining further treatment.
