Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) has gained significant attention following victories in recent Democratic primaries across major cities like New York, Philadelphia, and Denver. This momentum is paving the way for likely expansion within Congress after the 2026 midterm elections. The heightened focus has also drawn national attention to figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Despite these successes, there is growing concern among Democrats about the potential negative impact of DSA’s politics in more competitive regions. Polling data suggests that while socialism remains unpopular, DSA could face challenges in broader elections.

The Controversial Fox News Interview

During an interview on Fox News Sunday, DSA co-chair Megan Romer faced a series of pointed questions about the organization’s platform. Host Shannon Bream queried Romer on DSA’s support for eliminating the Senate, restructuring the presidency and Supreme Court, abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), abolishing borders, and defunding the Pentagon, among other policies.

Romer confirmed these policies are part of DSA’s long-term vision, stirring bipartisan backlash on social media.

Criticism from Across the Political Spectrum

Democrats such as Annie Andrews, a Senate candidate in South Carolina, criticized DSA’s ideas as disconnected from working people’s needs. Senator John Fetterman labeled DSA’s platform as anarchic, while activist Shannon Watts warned against alienating moderate votes.

Former Representative Tim Ryan urged Democrats to distance themselves from DSA to avoid negatively impacting the party.

Republicans also voiced strong opposition. Senator Ted Cruz and Senator Ashley Moody expressed severe criticism, describing the platform as destructive.

In Philadelphia, Chris Rabb secured a win in a contested primary, while in Denver, Melat Kiros unseated Representative Diana DeGette. These wins suggest additional DSA members will join prominent incumbents Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib in Congress.
