In the past week, First Lady Melania Trump was missing from two notable events in Washington. She did not attend Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral on Tuesday nor the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which was held on Friday.
President Donald Trump was present at both gatherings, including delivering a speech at Graham’s funeral. However, Melania Trump was not by his side on these occasions.
When contacted by Newsweek, Melania Trump’s press office did not provide details regarding her absence from either Graham’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral or the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. A White House spokesperson earlier informed Fox News that Melania Trump had a prior commitment that precluded her attendance on Friday.
After Graham’s passing, Melania issued a statement commending the long-serving senator for his dedication to public service. She expressed her sorrow, stating, “I am saddened by the unexpected passing of Senator Graham. Lindsey devoted his life to the service of our nation, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his duties. My deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his enduring legacy.”
Threat Emerges Amid Questions About First Lady’s Absences
The missing appearances coincided with revelations from the U.S. Secret Service regarding an Iran-linked video targeting Melania Trump. The agency confirmed that threats against those they protect are regularly assessed.
Nate Herring, a lead public affairs specialist with the U.S. Secret Service’s Communications and Media Relations office, acknowledged the video’s existence to Newsweek. He stated, “The Secret Service is aware of the video and investigates anything that can be perceived as a threat toward our protectees.”
The announcement followed reports about a video disseminated through an Iranian state-affiliated media outlet, which targeted the first lady. This footage is one among several aimed at President Trump and his family amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
Regarding operational security, Herring noted, “Out of concern for operational security, we do not discuss matters of protective intelligence.”
There are no public indications connecting Melania Trump’s absence from the events with the threat, and officials have not associated these issues.
