Spacecraft Faces Setback in NASA Telescope Rescue Mission

A spacecraft designed to rescue an aging NASA telescope has encountered difficulties. Katalyst Space Technologies announced that its Link satellite is facing thruster issues, leading to an uncontrollable spin that disrupts communication.

This issue emerged three weeks after the spacecraft, equipped with three robotic arms, entered orbit. Katalyst is working continuously to resolve the problem and enable Link to capture the Swift telescope and elevate its orbit.

The Swift telescope, launched in 2004, is descending faster than expected due to recent solar activity. Without intervention, it will crash to Earth this fall. To prevent this, NASA is spending $30 million on the rescue mission, rapidly organized in less than a year.

Swift is vital for scanning the universe for significant cosmic events like gamma-ray bursts and supernovae. Currently, scientific observations are paused.

Katalyst and NASA remain optimistic amid this challenge. According to Katalyst, all other key systems of Link are functioning properly.

“The mission remains active and we continue to believe that with these changes, Link has a viable path to rendezvous with Swift,”

said Katalyst in a statement.
