After a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto, Japan, Chicago White Sox player Munetaka Murakami reassured fans that his family was safe. The earthquake claimed at least 13 lives and injured many more. Murakami learned about the disaster early on Tuesday morning before their game against the New York Yankees.

During the game, Murakami hit 1-for-4 in the Sox’s 3-2 defeat. His parents, who had thrown the first pitch during Sunday’s bobblehead event, returned to Japan on Tuesday following news of the earthquake. Murakami expressed shock and distress, noting the region was recovering from a previous earthquake a decade ago.

“It’s really hard to take,” Murakami said through an interpreter. “Such events are beyond control. The progress made since the last earthquake makes the current situation even more unfortunate.” He ensured his loved ones were unharmed and pledged to support relief efforts.

Despite the personal turmoil, Murakami remains focused on his fans in Japan. “The encouragement from Japan fuels my performance,” he said. “I aim to give back by playing with dedication, offering something for Kumamoto to cheer about.”

The White Sox lost despite a late rally attempt witnessed by over 33,000 fans. Manager Will Venable stressed the importance of improving defense and baserunning. To secure a playoff berth, the team must perform consistently throughout the four-game series against the Yankees.

Yankee pitcher Gerrit Cole was a formidable opponent, delivering six innings without allowing any runs and striking out seven.
