Utah’s Democratic Divide: McAdams vs. Progressive Candidates

2 days ago 0

Ben McAdams, a moderate Democrat and former congressman, is competing against several progressive candidates in the newly established liberal congressional district of Salt Lake City. The political scenario in Utah, a state predominantly Republican, has shifted due to court-ordered redistricting, presenting a unique opportunity for Democrats.

Utah has not supported a Democratic presidential candidate since Lyndon B. Johnson. However, the redistricting process has resulted in the potential election of a Democrat to the House for the first time since 2018. This change has set the stage for a primary election that highlights a key divide within the Democratic Party: whether to pursue progressive activism or maintain moderate pragmatism.

On one hand, Ben McAdams, the last Democrat from Utah to serve in Congress, is running for office again. His previous term earned him the reputation of being one of the most conservative Democrats in the House. On the other hand, he faces three progressive challengers, including State Senator Nate Blouin, endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.

McAdams benefits from substantial financial support, with millions spent by a super PAC allied with the artificial intelligence sector, as well as backing from the New Democrat Majority, which supports centrist candidates. Nevertheless, the district’s pronounced left-leaning nature—evidenced by former Vice President Kamala Harris winning by 24 percentage points in 2024—compels McAdams to reconsider his past positions to appeal to the new voter base.
