Overcoming Periodontal Disease: A Journey from Sudden Diagnosis to Awareness

7 days ago 0

After completing Invisalign treatment, Jonathan Peralta Jr. was committed to wearing his retainers to maintain his teeth’s alignment. Despite sometimes forgetting, he largely adhered to the routine, wearing them consistently for nearly a year.

Gradually, however, Jonathan noticed changes. His teeth began to separate, feeling loose. Initially, he speculated inconsistent retainer use was the cause. As gaps widened, he continued wearing the retainers, sometimes forcing them into position due to improper fit.

Concerned, Jonathan scheduled a dental appointment, anticipating renewed Invisalign treatment to rectify the gaps. The diagnosis, however, drastically altered his expectations.

Following a detailed evaluation, Jonathan was diagnosed with severe bone loss, attributed to advanced periodontal disease. Affecting about 42% of adults aged 30 and older, this condition causes damage to the tissues and bone supporting teeth, potentially resulting in tooth loss. The extent of his bone loss was typically seen in individuals aged 65—not in someone in their twenties.

Prior to diagnosis, Jonathan was unaware of periodontal disease’s existence or severity. The disease had compromised the bone supporting his teeth, leading to instability as the bone loss increased. Periodontal disease impacts all teeth, attacking the gums and supporting structures. With significant advancement, it can affect numerous or all teeth.

“One tooth, my right lateral incisor, fell out naturally,” Jonathan recounts. “Though others remained, the bone loss was so severe that the dental team concluded extraction and replacement with full-mouth dental implants was necessary.”

At 25, losing his teeth was a devastating and unexpected blow for Jonathan, severely affecting his confidence and mental health. He became increasingly self-conscious, avoiding smiling, speaking, and even seeing himself.

The shock of experiencing bone loss akin to someone decades older left him feeling like his world was collapsing. Yet retrospection reveals gratitude, as the ordeal has created opportunities to educate others about periodontal disease.

Jonathan connected with people facing similar challenges or unfamiliar with the disease, sharing his journey of recovery and awareness. During the toughest times, feelings of fear, embarrassment, and overwhelm were prevalent.

Following recovery, Jonathan now possesses permanent full-mouth dental implants. Renewed confidence has been transformative, allowing him to smile freely.

Jonathan’s unforeseen experience underscores the significance of awareness. By sharing his account, he aims to help others recognize early signs of gum disease—like bleeding, red or swollen gums, receding gums, loosening teeth, or new gaps—and seek treatment before exacerbation.

The ordeal has led Jonathan to appreciate the impact of awareness. Speaking candidly about his journey, he hopes to inspire proactive health measures that may prevent similar experiences. Addressing symptoms early, he believes, offers the potential for positive outcomes.
