Hiker Self-Rescues After Accidental Injury on Montana Mountain

On July 20, 2026, David Cifaldi faced a challenging situation while hiking on Montana’s Froze-to-Death Plateau. Along with two companions, he was nearing the summit of Granite Peak when he slipped, causing a trekking pole to pierce his body.

The pole entered beneath Cifaldi’s left arm and exited through his back, missing vital organs. Despite the gravity of the situation, Cifaldi, a 32-year-old nurse specializing in wound care, remained calm and decided to manage the situation himself.

“We need to get off this mountain,” Cifaldi determined, despite his friends’ initial reservations. With minimal pain and little bleeding, he assessed his condition as manageable.

The group contacted local authorities using a Garmin inReach device to inform them of their plans for a self-rescue. They navigated challenging terrain, including boulders and snowfields, before reaching a more established trail.

After a demanding six-hour hike covering around 10 miles and descending 5,000 feet, Cifaldi and his companions reached their trailhead. Cifaldi’s friend, Jesse Ross, had left a vehicle there for their return.

Ross commented on Cifaldi’s confidence during the ordeal. “He’s the medical expert. Our role was to support,” Ross said.

Granite Peak stands at 12,800 feet and is known for its volatile weather. Many climbers attempt its summit annually, but it has also been the site of tragic incidents, including a 2019 accident where a climber fell to his death.

Throughout the descent, Ty Williams from the Stillwater County Search and Rescue Team monitored the hikers’ progress. Cifaldi communicated with the team, requesting no immediate assistance.

The group reached Ross’s vehicle by the afternoon and headed to a nearby clinic. However, Cifaldi required more advanced treatment at St. Vincent Regional Hospital in Billings, where doctors removed the pole and treated his injuries.

Reflecting on his decision, Cifaldi mentioned the cost of helicopter rescue was a factor. “Having trusted friends and a way to contact rescue services if needed made my decision easier,” he concluded.
