Eating all meals within an eight-to-nine-hour window might offer advantages for brain health. This insight comes from research presented at the NUTRITION 2026 conference, organized by the American Society for Nutrition in Maryland.
According to the study, participants who limited their daily eating time showed cognitive improvements after six months, although their weight loss was similar to those following typical eating schedules. “We are confident it is due to meal timing itself,” stated Sue Shapses, a professor at Rutgers University and the study’s lead investigator. She noted that both groups lost around 8 percent of their weight, but the time-restricted eating group had better cognitive outcomes.
“The findings were limited to women with overweight or obesity who were actively losing weight,” Shapses added. “We did not study leaner women or those not losing weight during the time-restricted eating.”
Alzheimer’s and dementia are rising with an aging population. While many studies link diet and lifestyle to dementia risk, few have tested if changing these habits reduces such risks.
To explore this, researchers studied 47 women aged 50 to 79 who were overweight or obese. Participants were instructed to reduce 500 calories daily as part of a weight-loss program. Twenty-six participants followed a time-restricted eating plan, consuming food within fewer than nine hours daily, commonly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with an average window of 8.2 hours. Others maintained a more traditional schedule, eating over about 12 hours daily.
After six months, both groups lost about 15 pounds on average, showing that weight loss was not the key difference. Instead, cognitive performance varied. Those restricting eating to eight or nine hours daily outperformed on spatial planning and problem-solving tests compared to the 12-hour group. A trend was observed in reduced mistakes on memory and learning tasks, although this was not statistically significant.
The study suggests participants improved in remembering daily information while making fewer memory, attention, and problem-solving errors. Larger cognitive improvements correlated with greater reductions in eating time.
Shapses mentioned the approach’s practicality, stating, “If they can’t do this every day—due to weekend events or weekday business dinners—it is OK to have occasional aberrations.” Study participants also sometimes deviated from the schedule.
The research was small, and the findings are preliminary. “We will continue our analysis and submit the full manuscript for peer-review for publication,” Shapses noted.
