Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona discussed his views on certain Democratic proposals during an interview on ‘Next Question with Katie Couric.’ He believes calls to abolish police, eliminate prisons and the border, and defund the Pentagon contribute to low approval ratings for Democrats. Kelly stated these ideas do not resonate with the American public.
Couric inquired if the ideological differences within the Democratic Party could impact candidates in the midterm elections and in the 2028 presidential race. Kelly acknowledged this possibility, expressing concern that voters might link extreme stances with all Democratic candidates.
“There are folks out there that say things that just don’t make sense to the American people, like abolish the police or get rid of jails and prisons,” Kelly said. “Those things don’t make sense.”
He emphasized that these proposals do not align with his beliefs or those of many in the party. Polls indicate a challenging environment for Democrats, with significant disapproval from voters. A Fox News poll showed only 42% viewed the Democratic Party favorably, while 58% were unfavorable. Additionally, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 72% of registered voters disapproved of Democrats’ actions in Congress.
Kelly voiced these concerns as Democratic socialist candidates gained ground in recent primaries, with notable victories in New York and Colorado. Despite these trends, Kelly is considering a 2028 presidential bid. He stated his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords, supports his potential candidacy.
“I have the ability to raise money. I’m pretty good at that,” Kelly said. “I tend to steer away from the stuff that is never going to happen, that is just about creating a lot of noise.”
Kelly highlighted his experiences directing funds to what he views as viable candidates and campaigns, steering clear of unattainable goals. Despite the party’s current issues, a recent poll showed Democrats ahead of Republicans by seven points among registered voters. Democratic enthusiasm for upcoming elections remains high, with 68% indicating strong motivation to vote.
