FIFA Reverses Decision on Commercial Stake Sale Amid Criticism

FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, have retracted plans to sell a stake in its commercial and event operations following widespread disapproval. Infantino stated: “After listening to various views, it is clear that the project caused divisions that are against our original objectives. Our aim is to unite and improve, so this proposal will not proceed.”

The proposal faced significant opposition from UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). UEFA declared all 55 member nations would boycott FIFA competitions, including World Cups, if the plans continued.

Despite an initial insistence on advancing the project, internal resistance grew. Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s adviser, called the plan damaging for FIFA and the future of football. FIFA’s COO, Kevin Lamour, expressed feeling deceived and emphasized the need for football leaders to make the right decisions.

FIFA originally aimed to create FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) for event management and sought to sell a 21% minority stake to raise $4.2 billion. These funds would support the new FIFA Fast-Forward Programme. However, 137 of FIFA’s 211 member associations opposed the project, which required majority support to proceed.

As the opposition grew, Infantino’s future as FIFA president became uncertain. Reports revealed diminishing trust in his leadership, with Norway’s Football Federation President Lise Klaveness highlighting concerns about governance principles.

This scenario is a significant setback for Infantino, who once presided over $15 billion in World Cup revenue. His vulnerability increased as UEFA, Concacaf, and AFC condemned the project, eventually leading to its abandonment. Challenges to his presidency may arise ahead of the 2027 elections, with nominations due by November.
