President Donald Trump disagreed with the decision of his top local prosecutor regarding damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He labeled it as ‘a pure case of VANDALISM.’ Federal officials, however, attributed the issue to contractor failures, leading to the dismissal of felony charges against former U.S. Olympian David Hearn.
Trump’s Criticism
Trump expressed his disapproval of Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on Truth Social. He questioned her judgment in dismissing the charges. This came after Pirro’s office requested a judge to drop the felony destruction of property charge against Hearn, who allegedly damaged the Reflecting Pool’s lining.
Trump insisted that the incident was straightforward vandalism and mentioned a separate incident where ’86 47′ was etched into the grass nearby. This phrase has political implications and is viewed by some supporters as a threat to Trump.
Charges Dropped
Pirro’s office abandoned the charges following reports from the Department of the Interior. These reports showed problems with the renovation project, including issues with the lining, which started failing days after installation. The motion filed by the office stated it was challenging to prove vandalism without reasonable doubt due to these newly discovered flaws.
Trump’s Standpoint
While Trump acknowledged that there might have been contractor issues, he claimed vandals caused the major damage. He dismissed the conclusions of the Justice Department about construction deficiencies being the primary cause.
Legal Proceedings
Hearn faced an indictment on July 2 for pulling at the pool’s protective coating, with damage estimates exceeding $1,000. The Department of the Interior initially provided limited reports, withholding documents indicating installation flaws. The government later received additional information showing defective work by Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the contractor responsible for the $14 million project.
The dismissal of charges is without prejudice, allowing for possible future prosecution. Meanwhile, Hearn’s lawyers accused authorities of hasty prosecution and demanded an apology for the wrongful charges against him.
