Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, has criticized members of her own party in a podcast interview for their support of former President Joe Biden. She discussed how Democrats lost credibility on democracy issues during an interview with ‘The Majority Report’ hosted by Emma Vigeland. The host pointed out that Democrats neglected voters amid the ‘genocide in Gaza’ and supported Biden’s re-election without a primary challenge.
Vigeland mentioned that Kamala Harris spoke about democracy but lacked the necessary credibility to confront threats of fascism. Ocasio-Cortez noted that some Democrats who pushed for Biden’s ouster were also those who supported a primary process closure when there was an opportunity during a presidential election.
Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that Democrats were compensating within the party by setting a litmus test for calling on Biden to step down. She expressed frustration with the consultant class and others who backed Biden during this time. She identified establishment figures closing ranks around Biden instead of allowing a primary process.
Despite growing calls, Ocasio-Cortez remained loyal to Biden until he withdrew from the race in July 2024, following his debate with Donald Trump. She acknowledged the lack of alternative scenarios that wouldn’t lead to significant danger.
Jonathan Alter, a therapist, warned that Democratic voters might lose trust in their party due to perceived hypocrisy. Mistakes can be forgiven, but believing different rules apply to opponents compared to those in power can erode trust quickly.
Ocasio-Cortez argued Democrats rallied around Biden, though they later distanced themselves as their actions became unpopular. Following the June debate, Biden faced increasing demands to leave the 2024 race. Former Democratic lawmaker Dean Phillips launched a primary against Biden in 2024, but he had little impact on contest outcomes.
Phillips claimed Democratic leadership strongly opposed his nomination efforts, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries’ staff stating that he wouldn’t speak to Biden or other White House officials.
