Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, has expressed concern regarding the increasing influence of far-left socialist elements within the Democratic Party. He points to the growing prominence of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) in crucial primaries as evidence of this trend. This shift has potential implications for future elections.
A socialist candidate challenging an incumbent House Democrat has revealed a rare agreement with Republicans on a single issue. Michigan state lawmaker Donavan McKinney is part of the DSA, pushing establishment Democrats nationwide as the 2026 midterm elections approach. The DSA’s momentum is backed by their appeal to leftist base voters and the same working-class, anti-establishment sentiments that aided President Donald Trump’s 2016 election victory.
In a recent interview with Zeteo News, McKinney hinted at his shared perspective with Republicans, stating, “I gotta give Republicans—I agree with them on this one issue. The one issue is waste, fraud, and abuse.” However, his views diverge when identifying the sources of these issues. “Republicans’ analysis suggests waste, fraud, and abuse focus on the poor, akin to voting fraud, representing a very minor percentage,” he explained. “Our taxpayer dollars are subsidizing corporations and the wealthy, which is causing the disparity, not the poor.”
McKinney is contesting Rep. Shri Thanedar, a progressive Democrat who broke ties with the DSA due to the party’s stance on Israel. During a recent rally, McKinney aimed to connect with voters feeling financial strain, emphasizing the need to redirect taxpayer resources. “People in my district, including seniors and children, lack necessary resources while taxpayer money funds overseas conflicts,” he stated, criticizing the current allocation of governmental funds.
He also targeted lawmakers in both political parties for being out of touch with everyday American struggles. McKinney noted that many voters face challenges sustaining themselves with essential resources.
On the other side, the increasing influence of the socialist left offers potential advantages for Republicans. They argue that Americans do not support socialism or its primary ideals, such as wealth redistribution and capitalism’s decline. Despite these warnings, DSA-affiliated candidates have already successfully unseated incumbent House Democrats in New York and Colorado.
