US Embassy Warns of Possible Disruptions for Travelers to Cuba Amid Power Outages

Americans planning to travel to Cuba should prepare for significant disruptions due to a widespread blackout crisis affecting the nation, according to officials.

The U.S. Embassy in Havana issued a statement highlighting Cuba’s current total power failure, resulting from the collapse of its electrical grid. The embassy advised all U.S. citizens currently in Cuba or intending to visit to adjust their plans accordingly.

Cuba’s power crisis has led to its sixth national grid failure of 2026, with three outages occurring in July alone, reports indicate.

Residents are enduring extreme heat without air conditioning. The Associated Press (AP) reported that many people are sleeping outside by the water to find relief from the oppressive temperatures. On Sunday, the temperature reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit, but with 80% humidity, it felt more like 106 degrees.

Despite not being a primary tourist destination, Cuba still draws visitors from around the globe, including Americans. U.S. law prohibits travel to Cuba solely for tourism. However, Americans can visit under specific categories like family visits, journalism, education, religious activities, humanitarian projects, and support for the Cuban people, according to the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

In May 2025, the State Department issued a travel advisory urging Americans in Cuba to remain vigilant. It advised against resisting robbery attempts and displaying wealth, such as expensive watches or jewelry.

Widespread outages, combined with high temperatures, have left many without air conditioning as Cuba faces another national power crisis. The State Department suggested travelers bring portable battery banks, spare batteries, and nonperishable food and water due to prolonged outages.

Cuba has long struggled with an outdated electrical grid, compounded by recurring fuel shortages leading to repeated nationwide blackouts. Cuban authorities have attributed part of the energy crisis to U.S. sanctions. However, the cause of the latest blackout remains unclear, according to Cuban regime media.
