John James Wins Michigan Republican Gubernatorial Primary

John James, endorsed by former President Trump, has emerged as the victor in the Republican gubernatorial primary in Michigan. As reported by CBS News, unofficial tallies indicated that James led with 155,109 votes compared to businessman Perry Johnson’s 111,942 votes as of late Tuesday night.

The Candidates

U.S. Rep. John James officially launched his gubernatorial bid in April 2025. His background includes service as an aviation officer in the U.S. Army for eight years and leadership in a supply chain and logistics firm. James previously contested and lost U.S. Senate races in 2018 and 2020. However, he succeeded against Democrat Carl Marlinga in subsequent elections held in 2022 and 2024.

With his decision to pursue the governorship, Michigan’s 10th Congressional seat is now available. James emphasized the importance of strong leadership for achieving broader Republican electoral success, saying, “A strong top of the ticket is the greatest indicator that we’ll have success for Republicans up and down the ticket.” His campaign benefited from significant endorsements, including those from President Trump and Rep. Aric Nesbitt.

Perry Johnson, on the other hand, launched his gubernatorial campaign in January 2026. Notably, he was previously disqualified from the 2022 Michigan governor’s race due to invalid petition signatures. Additionally, Johnson attempted a 2024 presidential run but did not qualify for the debates. He touts his business acumen in the auto industry as a resource for improving state governance.

Key Issues

During his time in Congress, James prioritized national security, energy independence, and bolstering law enforcement. Recently, he advocated for action in response to Canadian wildfire smoke that affected Michigan, promoting collaboration with Canadian officials to mitigate such issues.

If elected governor, he promises to focus on environmental preservation, with particular attention to safeguarding Michigan’s water, air, and land. “We absolutely need to make sure that we are resilient for extreme weather, and making sure that we’re doing that in all seasons,” he said.

Johnson’s platform emphasizes tax reform, proposing the elimination of Michigan’s state income tax. He claims this would allow families to retain around $4,747 annually. To counterbalance the potential revenue shortfall, Johnson plans to audit state expenses to enhance efficiency. Further, he seeks to reform property taxes.

Although Johnson is funding his campaign independently, he reflects on his modest upbringing as shaping his perspective and commitment to financial efficiency and accountability. “When you’ve been there, and you’ve been in that kind of environment, you have an entirely different perspective,” he remarked.
